Getting organized before moving can help you stay on track and minimize moving stress.
Before you move, make a checklist of everything you must do. From arranging movers, to figuring out a move in time with your landlord, a list helps you stay on top of everything. Here are our tips to help make moving easier.
Purge your belongings
Eliminate some of your workload by not packing anything you don't intend to unpack. As you pack, set aside a bin for donations and a bag for trash. Carefully go through your items to get rid of anything you won't need or won't have space for in your new rental.
Use what you have
Your linens and towels will make excellent packing material for your fragile items. Use linens for dishes, glassware, vases, frames, and other breakables. Use your towels and bedsheets on your furniture to keep it clean and minimize any dents and scratches they may get. Gather your hanging clothes and put a garbage bag over the hangers to keep them together, clean, and ready to hang up in your new closets.
Plan it out
As you pack, plan where you'll need to unpack each box in your new rental. Group boxes by room and label them with a brief list of what's inside. Arrange boxes so the first to go are the ones that belong at the back of your rental. This will keep a clear path throughout your home and reduce clutter for movers.
Pack an essentials box
An essentials box should contain everything you need at your new rental that first day, such as:
- Toilet paper and paper towels
- Hand soap and sanitizer
- Hand towels
- Disposable plates and cutlery
- A flashlight
- Garbage bags
- Charging cables for cellphones
- First aid kit and any important medication
Pre-order your meal
It's easy to get carried away and forget to eat on moving day. Order delivery to arrive at dinnertime so you'll have one less thing to worry about. Plan to stock your fridge with plenty of beverages to offer to anyone helping you move. Having a few prepackaged snacks available is also a good idea.
